Election 2016: Racism
Race and racial comments have always been a constant issue throughout American politics; they are a constant and troubling feature of the political race. This particular election, racial comments have been especially troubling and draw much attention to opposing party campaigns. Donald Trump has been the candidate with much attention drawn to him because of his offensive comments regarding race. There are many clear examples that in fact support his campaign such as the "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the U.S." This proposal initiated condemnation from both parties however Trump said it was necessary to protect the homeland. He is clearly deciding our country by race and treating millions of Americans as inferior. Along with this, Trumps daily speech is just racist. He refers to native americans as, "the blacks", and states "I am a neighbor like you folk" in reference to Jewish stereotypes. However, perhaps one of the most offense statements he has made was to John R. O'Donnell, the former president of Trump Plaza Hotel and Casino. Trump stated, "I have black guys counting my money... I hate it... Laziness is a trait in blacks. It really is, I believe that." This was accounted for in John R. O'Donnell's book Trumped. Along with Trump, his campaign team has shown to be offensive in the same regards. As CNN Politics states, Mark Burns, Trump's most prominent black surrogate, spent much apologizing for tweeting an offensive cartoon that showed Clinton in black face and speaking in dialect. The tweet was supposedly an attempt to broaden Trump's appeal to African-Americans by suggesting Clinton didn't deserve the support of black voters. Burns followed this in an interview with CNN's Alisyn Camerota on "New Day." He stated, "Obviously, my message, I stand by it, but the methodology I do not."
The racist comments made by Trump and his followers are countless, because of this Trump has to try to enhance his image among minority voters, particularly African-Americnas and Latinos. Personally, I am fascinated by how many followers he has gained through these remarks, it truly reflects a side of our country that is scary to see.
