THE PRINTING PRESS vs. THE AIR CONDITIONER
Both the modern air conditioner and the famous printing press have had a major effect on our modern society. The air conditioner was first created in 1902 by Willis Carrier in Buffalo, New York. This machine has become an upper class necessity and provided comfort to those that can afford it. The printing press was first created in the Holy Roman Empire by the German Johannes Gutenberg around 1440, based on existing screw presses. This amazing machine has revolutionized education, religion, politics and overall society as we know it to be today. I believe that between these two technologies, the printing press has had a greater impact on humanity than the air conditioner.
The air conditioner is a house accessory used to provide comfort and relief from outside temperatures. The lone purposes of this machine are to lower a temperature, increasing comfort levels, and wether it is for a human pleasure or it is to preserve an area or object it can be seen as necessary. This machine is used in houses, schools, rinks, refrigerating systems, and many other places that require a cool atmosphere. Although this machine could seem necessary in some conditions it also has downfalls such as the amount of energy it requires to function making it an expensive machine and bad for the environment. Overall the air conditioner has not had nearly the impact that the printing press has had.
After the creation of the printing press in 1440, it became a driving force for spreading education, news, religion, and overall knowledge all over the world. This lead to better education and a wider range of inelegance. One specific example is Luther. Luther used the printing press to spread his ideas in Europe regarding the roman catholic church. Along with this the printing press is at use just as much today, if not more, than when it was first created. Books, magazines, news papers, and ideas are printed and exposed all over the world. Freedom of the press was even made an amendment in August 1735 making it legal to print ideas from printing presses all over the world. Overall the printing press has had a larger impact on humanity than the air conditioner.
