Imperialism: Was It All Bad?
In the video the speaker states, "... some British colonialism actually was good..." This was further backed up by points regarding the abolishment of slavery, the British Navy, and liberty. The speaker makes the argument that The British did everything they could just to abolish slavery and that no matter what happened, they were the good guys. The speaker re-states on multiple occasions that the British Navy played a “decisive role” in the abolishment of slavery. Their ships used its power to try to preserve order in the world and show supremacy. This naval power is then connected back to the sealing of magna carta. These ships enforced liberty and the law that was established by Magna Carta and all these things together “make a society flourish”. His driving point was both political and biased, imperialism was not all bad. He wanted to show us his conservative perspective.
The speaker himself most definitely has a political agenda. By referring to Obama in a negative way and bringing up the military in such a positive way, it is clear that he personally doesn't want another liberal president! Let me explain. Obama and Hilary both, in the speakers eyes, weakened the military. The speaker refers to the military as power and power to success, so having another liberal president would not make America great again, but weaken it. It is always important to check for biases, this can easily be done by vetting a source. I vetted this source by googling the speaker, checking his website, looked for organizations he belonged in. It is super important to understand that not everything you hear or see is true, one way to recognize this is though vetting. Vetting is also important so you know what is wrong and right; no one wants to have an opinion "based on falsehood". Along with this, some of the comments on the youtube page gave me an idea of the bias as well. For example, one comment refers to gay sex in a negative derogatory way. This is just one example reflecting how conservative the opinions are and bias in this video. |
